In 1984 Suzanne H Visser spent four months making washi paper in silence at a Zen monastery in Japan, and left with a thousand sheets she would carry around the world. Ode to the Desert tells what became of them: her father’s bistre, a brown ink burned from walnut husks, which she learned to fire in clay ovens in four colours; years of life drawing wherever she lived; and the old drawings she dyed and tore into the shapes of ranges, riverbeds and sky to make the four Japanese-style screens of Ode to the Desert: The Dry, Fire, Wildflower Season and Night.
Illustrated with 13 colour images, it accompanies the Ode to the Desert exhibition at the Maryborough Art Society in March 2027.
